Tennis Committee update to Elm Park Members February 2018.
Fellow members, we want to update you on the Tennis Club activities so far this year and provide you with some information regarding our priorities for the year ahead.
The new Tennis Committee has met twice and will continue to meet monthly for the remainder of the year. We have three new committee members: Aislinn Hampson, Greg Duffy and Eddie McGrath. Details of the Elm Park Board and all committees can be accessed here Board and Committees. In addition, we have, and are forming sub committees to share the load and tap into all the available experience, expertise and enthusiasm to keep improving the experience of Tennis in Elm Park.

Winter team tennis concluded with the top 2 teams from Wednesday and Thursday nights playing for 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th places Ė the battle for first and second ended in a draw and was decided by a hotly contested toss of a coin! There was a great atmosphere for the presentations on Thursday 22nd where the players on the night were joined by many more members to enjoy the food, wine and banter associated with this great competition. Progressive Doubles begins next week (w/c March 5th) with the Menís competition on Wednesdays and Ladies on Thursdays. Aislinn and Eddie are working with their sub-committee to further enhance our tennis programme and two events to look out for are a special Easter ďClub NightĒ on Good Friday March 30th and a special night for Tennis beginners, date tbc.
DLTC Winter Leagues
Elm Park Ladies 1st, 3rd and 4th teams (classes 4, 6, 6) have qualified from their sections for play-off rounds next Sunday. Firsts will play in Malahide, 3rds in Celbridge and 4ths in Naas. All class 6 play-off winners and class 4 semi-finalists will be promoted.
The 2nd team will hold its class 4 position as will the 5th team who remain in class 5. Well done to the co-ordinators Ger Hynes and Jean Twohig, all the Captains, players and subs who rallied together to compete so successfully in the face of the huge challenge posed by an inordinate number of injuries. Thank you also to Rob and Victoria for their excellent coaching sessions.
In recent years Elm Park have entered 3 teams in the Menís Winter League and often struggled to field them. This year encouraged by the numbers interested in playing, the organisation of Rob Dowley and his Captains and the coaching of Rob Cherry and Victoria, we entered 5 teams. Rob Dowley describes how they fared in the pool matches:
1. Menís 1st won their group in Class 3, and have a bye in the last 16, so will have a promotion play-off match at home on the 10th - v- Malahide 3 or 4 (who play each other first).
2. Menís 2nd team staved off relegation with a vital point from Ken Fitz and JM Downey in their last match Ė they won that in a last set tie-break, from 2;5 down! Great result to stay up, as Class 3 standard now very high, and 2nds were in the Group of Death.
3. Menís 3rds are through to the Class 5 play offs, with a promotion match at home on Sunday v Navan 2.
4. Menís 4th team topped their Group in Class 7, with a promotion match v Blackrock 4 at home on Sunday.
5. Menís 5th team did great, finishing 3rd in their Group, and giving two of our Juniors their first DLTC league campaign.

The Summer League (May 11th to June 30th) with its format of 3 singles and 2 doubles presents a different challenge and we will be meeting over the coming weeks to decide on how many teams we will enter.
The Charity recommenced this week and we have three teams competing and hoping to build on their great success in the autumn tournament. Updates will be posted in the tennis section of the Elm Park website.
The new Junior Committee is up and running with Greg Duffy at the helm of a small army spearheaded by parents: Jessica McCormack, Jane Bracken, Sheana Corcoran and Suzanne Arbuthnot. Veronica Lyons, our Child Welfare Officer, has formally joined the committee this year and the whole operation is glued and oiled by our administrative guardian angel, Emmanuelle Fitzsimons.
The new Junior Captains: Isabelle McCarthy and Peter Quinlan will be central to everything and we wish them well in the year ahead.
The junior coaching programme under Rob and Victoria, continues to be a success, despite the usual drop off after Christmas period. We have approximately 170 juniors now participating in the junior programme, higher than the summer term last year and with more coming each week this will hopefully get back to around 190 juniors for the summer term after Easter.
Report Cards for the junior coaching programme were introduced and are sent to parents who requested them for their child/children at the end of Term 1 and Term 3.
It was great to see 2 junior boys and 1 junior girl make it onto the Adult Winter League teams and we are encouraging some other juniors to do the Adult League Coaching. We hope for these numbers to rise considerably in the future.
Our Stars and Stripes (U.14) team have reached the final of the Shield competition and are scheduled to play in Carrickmines LTC at 5pm on Saturday, March 3rd.
The Committee have reviewed the bye laws and have made two changes. The first change relates to coaching and specifically with regards to court allocation. We have amended the rule to allow advanced Dome courts bookings to facilitate and support the junior coaching programme. The second change relates to etiquette / acceptable behaviour. To be consistent with the Elm Park Value of ďconsideration and respect for allĒ we have clarified what we mean by acceptable behaviour to guide our own behaviour and the consideration and respect we are entitled from others. The revised bye laws will be published on the Elm Park website and displayed on the tennis Noticeboard.
5 Year Strategy for Tennis in Elm Park.
To be aligned with the overall Strategic Plan for Elm Park and to provide a rolling road map for future committees, we have prioritised the creation of a five-year tennis plan in 2018. We have structured the plan around a number work streams; facilities, membership, programme, governance etc and we will have a first version to offer you for your input by the end of April.
